Updated 0900 Wednesday 26 October

Here are the details for the final day, SATURDAY 29 OCTOBER:

CARRON CRAG on its own from Grizedale Visitor Centre (LA22 0QJ, MR 336942): Allow 45 minutes from M6 Junc 36 and see directions below. Everyone is welcome! it will be helpful to know if you’re coming, but not essential – if in doubt, just turn up!

A 3.5 mile walk on good paths, 650′ of ascent, suitable for any reasonably fit walker. Starting time 10.00 am. Non-walkers are also very welcome – I suggest non-walkers arrive at the Visitor Centre around 12 noon.

DIRECTIONS TO GRIZEDALE FOREST VISITOR CENTRE – VERY IMPORTANT!!

Several possible routes to the Visitor Centre are very difficult to follow and very easy to get lost on! The best way is as follows:  From the M6 (junc 36) take the A591, then the first exit towards Barrow (A590). Follow the A590 and continue PAST Newby Bridge for 2.7 miles to Haverthwaite crossroads: TURN RIGHT here and follow the brown tourist signs to Satterthwaite and Grizedale Visitor Centre. You want the main Visitor Centre, after a number of smaller Forestry Commission car parks which you should ignore.

For more information follow this link. You’ll need to bring some money or a debit card for the car park, which I’m afraid is a bit expensive, but won’t be more than £7.00.

WE’LL MEET OUTSIDE THE TOILETS NEAR THE LEARNING CENTRE AT THE TOP OF THE MAIN CAR PARK (Don’t cross the road to the Courtyard) AT 10.00 am and set off NO LATER than 10.30 am.

It’ll be helpful if you let me know you’re coming, but don’t worry if you forget – on this one occasion it’s not essential and you can just turn up (providing you’re on time!)

Postscript: You may notice that Pillar Rock is not amongst the list of fells climbed:  for ordinary walkers like me it’s a proper serioius rock climb (ropes and stuff), and I missed the opportunity to do it in late summer due to a nasty boil exactly where the climber’s harness goes. With the days now shorter, and less chance of bone dry conditions, I’m not keen to do it and it’s generally accepted that completion of the Birketts is allowed without Pillar Rock. I’ll still have done 542, as I didn’t realise when I did Mungrisdale Common (a Wainwright) that this is not a Birkett, making 540 + 2!)
